Vulnerability...who is and why?

What makes a character vulnerable?  How do we as readers percieve, react to and reach judgement on characters that exhibit a vulnerable side?  Are they endearing or distasteful...why?

  2. Characters may be vulnerable mentally or physically. In the novel Frankenstein Victor Frankenstein is perceived as vulnerable mentally because he allows his emotions to cloud his judgement and to make him gullible and vulnerable to the "Monsters"request to build a mating partner for it. Everyone is vulnerable at some point it time. It's impossible to be invulnerable all the time. Some characters become endearing and provokes more positive pathos from the audience because their vulnerabilty is a source of strength that compels them to change or to correct the error of their ways. Some characters may become distasteful to the audience because their vunerability causes them to make wrong decisions and mistakes. This can provoke negative judgements from the audience.

  3. one becomes vurnabal when they are too excepting of something, or too un-expecting of others. Just as those who blindaly fallow, or those who blindlay lead. An example of this would be those who blindly fallow the church. On the other side those who refuse to see their own fault become vulnerable to their own destruction.

  4. Characters often illustrate vulnerablity when they are being attacked or harmed either physically or emotionally. Readers often react to a characters vulnerablity in a sympathetic manor (pathos). When a character is vulnerable it is usually enduring. The reader is able to see a part of a characters personality that they never knew existed. Thus the character can be viewed in a more positive way.

  5. A character may become vulnerable whether it is through strong emotional break down or physical weakness. Readers may react positively towards this vulnerability displayed in a character or negatively depending on the situation. If it seems clear that it is necessary for a character to overcome their vulnerability (or fears) then readers may become frustrated because he/she is not 'stepping up to the plate'. Vulnerability can also endear the character especially when they are particularly strong or arrogant. To see a softer side of a character can cause them to seem more relatable to the average reader and therefore more likeable.

  6. Often, when making a character, one is advised to have some weakness. This may be justified in terms of creating a more compelling character, or maybe because this and that character have some weakness. Superman has a weakness, after all. I think that weakness is not really what people usually are looking for – rather, vulnerable characters are what is wanted

  7. A character may become vulnerable by being easily opened to be attacked or taken advantage of.They can become quickly vulnerable emotionally by letting letting other people influence them in a horrible way. Being vulnerable emotionally means that they let others take the intuitive to run over them completely. Characters can sometimes be endearing vulnerable because they can feel the need to please their surroundings. They also may be distasteful by bad influence from their surroundings.

  8. What is an Archetype?
The archetypes portrayed throughout frankentstein thus far are mainly the mad scientist idea, and the fact that Victor wishes to avenge his dead brother.

    Vulnerability...who is and why?
In the Frankenstein novel quite frankly every character other than the monster that we've been introduced to is vulnerable. Vulnerability is born in these characters from their reactions to the death of William and Justine. The fact that these characters are so unusually dependent on one another for emotional support reveals how vulnerable each one is. In assessing the characters, it makes the reader definitely feel as though the characters are tighter than most families are and it makes the characters appear more sensitive and caring. However, the reader really begins to feel like emotionally the characters aren't fortified enough to handle almost any troubling situation thrown at them.

  9. There are many ways someone may feel vulnerable. They can be vulnerable physically, if they're frail or if they're in a dangerous situation, or just in the wrong place. They can be emotionally vulnerable if they just came out of a traumatic situation or if they're still in one. Some feel vulnerable in a room full of people they don't know. Some feel vulnerable with people around them. I, as a reader, don't have a set opinion about vulnerable characters. If I care for the character, then their vulnerability fills me with suspense and I care if something bad happens to them. If I don't particulary care for whomever may be vulnerable, then I don't really care either way. If I dislike/hate the character, then I'm all for their vulnerabilities being exploited. For me, it's not the vulnerability that makes or breaks the character. Some can appear more pitiful, or more precious, but it's really the vulnerability in relation to how I feel about the character, not the other way around.

  10. Characters with a vulnerable side in novels tend to attract a readers' compassion and gives them an element of innocence. As a reader of Frankenstein I feel that the monster is the most vulnerable out of the characters because of his innocence and lack of knowledge about the way things work in society. He wasn't taught nor raised nor treated like a living thing should be and he was motivated purely on instinct. His vulnerability comes from the fact that yes, though he is a murderer and criminalistic he is still in some ways a child. He knows not what he is doing and as a reader that's waht allows me to side with him in some instances.

  11. Characters that are vulnerable in a story bring the attention of the reader to that character. Many times they are vulnerable because of something that happened in their past; in this case the character is Frankenstein. I think Frankenstein is the most vulneralbel beacsue he has no clue about what is goig on where he is and it seem sto be that HE is the problem in the community. To me i think vulnerability is endearing to a certain extint. When a person is mistreated because of the way they look and they had no say in it, it makes me sad and feel where they are coming from. frankenstein's vulnerability is very endearing because he is so innocent and ignorant to the ways of society.

  12. A character may become vulnerable by allowing others to influence them in ways they should. Most give them to much power over their lives and their thoughts. Characters can be endearing vulnerable because they feel as though they have to please others around them. They feel as though they have to get others approval.

  13. A Vulnerable Character may weak, sick or emotionaly stressed by drama going on in the book. A person may be vulnerable by the other characters in the book the way that they are treated or seen in the book. They are more distasteful they are looked down at by the readers

  14. A character can be vulnerable in a mental and physical stage.Victor is vulnerable becuz he become sick do to the actions of his creation. The monster is vulnerable becuz he is in a world, uninformed surving on basic instincts

  15. When thinking of vulnerable characteristic, you picture it being either mental or physical. In the novel i see that Dr. Frankenstein is the vulnerable one. He is easily persuaded emotionally by his surroundings. His emotions can change your attitude towards the creation in the book and towards his own personal attributes.

  16. the vulnarablity of a character makes them more similar to reader therefore drawing in the readers attention. Depending of the situation of the vulnerablity, the character can come off as the victim or the offender. This again draws the readers attention, and it shows the human nature of the character in the story for ex. Frankenstein and the treatment of the creature.

  18. EVERYONE IS PRETTY MUCH ON THE SAME PAGE..I THINK BEING VULNERABLE IS MORE EMOTIONAL BUT YET STILL PHYSICAL..ITS WHEN YOU EXPECT SO MUCH FROM SOMETHING OR SOMEONE..AS A READER WE'RE SOMEWHAT JUDGEMENTAL BECAUSE WE DONT KNOW THE CHARACTERS PERSONALLY..YOU EITHER RELATE OR YOU DONT..THEY CAN BE BOTH ENDEARING OR DISTASTEFUL IT JUST ALL BOILS DOWN TO HOW YOU PERCEIVE THE CHARACTER AND HOW YOU INTERPRET THE NOVEL!

  19. One becomes vulnerable when they are mad, sad, or just suffering from various mixed emotions. While suffering from these emotions you are subseptable to being influenced by others. In this book, the creatre is vulnerable beacause he feels one way and attempts to act a certain way and yet he continues to be neglected by society. This draws the reader closer to the targeted character and makes you feel asthough you know them personally.

  20. When you construct a character, there has to be some weaknesses built in. A vulnerable character is one that can be emotionally influenced by other characters, player or non-player ones, and by the events in the world. Even Superman has a couple weaknesses and in those instances he is considered vulnerable. These weaknesses in a character can evoke negative perceptions in the audience; but also draws the reader closer to them and have a protective aura for them.

  21. One could argue that all characters are vulnerable, but to be truly vulnerable, the character must be protected at all times.this is uually not endearing unless the character is a baby or small child. In franknsteins case, its usually just annoying. However, I'm sure another reader with more pathos might perceive the vulnerability of frankenstein to be endearing and an insightful look into the inner wokings of his mind.

  22. All characters can be vunerable somehow, either emotionally or physically. Both villains and superheros are vulnerable. When we encounter a vulnerable hero, weare usually concerned and surprised they have a weakness. But when a villain is vulnerable, we are pleased or feel sorry for them. -Diego Bravo

  23. As a human, vulnerability is a given emotion but the creature being a "non-human", it is amazing for it to show vulnerability towards humans from fear, we as readers would percieve this vulnerability as a true conscience, an in turn "humanity". Which begs the question, is the creature not human? Most would find vulnerability endearing but the creature soon finds it can also be distracting to show vulnerability so he casts it aside and chooses to embrace vengeance.

  24. Within this novel all of the characters seem to have a vulnerable side. Early on in the novel vulnerability is presented when both William and Justine die. All of the characters in the novel are close nit almost as if they are a family and the are all dependent on one another who makes for alot of vulnerability when the characters do not hav each other to depend upon. Then only character in the novel that is not vulnerable and shows no sign is the actual monster Frankestein. But the rest of the characters show sign of vulnerability.

Vulnerability has been characterized greatly in the novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", Scout the young girl has a vulnerable position in the plot due to her father's. Scout is who she is because of the way Atticus has raised her. He has nurtured her mind, conscience, and individuality without bogging her down in fussy social hypocrisies and notions of propriety. While most girls in Scout’s position would be wearing dresses and learning manners, Scout, thanks to Atticus’s hands-off parenting style, wears overalls and learns to climb trees with Jen and Dill.

  26. A character is considered vulnerable when they are abandoned or exposed to things which they are unaccustomed to. In this novel Frankenstein is considered as one vulnerable character who was abandoned at "birth" and exposed to the malicious violence and evils which the human race is capable of. Since he had to teach himself about life he was vulnerable to all negative influences. One in particular, murder, which he committed multiple times. As readers we are sympathetic to the vulnerable character yet we pass judgment that he is distasteful to the severity of the bloodshed he causes.
